What is a Surgical Oncologist?

A surgical oncologist spends an additional 2-3 years after general surgery training to specialize in cancer surgery and develop a broader understanding of related fields like medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, clinical trials and research.  Bringing all of this training to bear to optimize a particular treatment for any given patient is the goal of a surgical oncologist.   Many studies have shown than specialization provides significantly better outcomes and overall survival when compared to generalists.
